Radiographic Testing Personnel Support
The Method
How we support RT.
Radiographic testing produces an image of a part's internal condition using X-ray or gamma radiation. It requires a radioactive materials or X-ray registration, a radiation safety program, and controlled exposure areas.
On customer-run programs, TCI personnel work under the customer's license, radiation safety program, procedures, and supervision.
Where the governing code permits, phased array UT can provide volumetric weld examination without radiation exposure areas or source handling — often with less disruption to other work.
Applications
Scope of support
- Qualified RT personnel working within a customer's radiography program
- Butt weld and casting examination performed under the customer's procedures
Detection capability
What RT can detect
- Porosity and gas voids
- Slag and tungsten inclusions
- Incomplete penetration
- Cracks and incomplete fusion when favorably aligned with the beam
Methods & Equipment
Equipment
- Sources, exposure devices, and radiation safety equipment are provided and controlled by the customer's licensed program
Technical Considerations
Limits and requirements to plan for.
Customer-controlled program
Licensing, radiation safety, source control, and procedures remain the responsibility of the customer's program.
Planar discontinuities
Cracks and lack of fusion not aligned with the beam may be missed. UT and PAUT are often more sensitive to planar flaws.
In Practice
How customers use this support.
Customer RT programs
Qualified personnel to supplement a customer's radiography staff.
RT alternatives
PAUT for volumetric examination where codes and customers allow.
How TCI Supports You
