NAVSEA & Defense Inspection

Inspection for naval shipbuilding programs.

Naval shipbuilding imposes some of the most rigorous inspection requirements in industry. TCI supports that work with inspection teams, phased array and conventional NDT, and certified welding inspection performed to the NAVSEA and military requirements customers invoke.

Inspection Requirements

Requirements flow down. Inspection proves them.

On naval programs, inspection requirements originate in government specifications and flow down through prime contractors and shipbuilders to every supplier and subcontractor. Contracts, drawings, and purchase orders identify which methods apply, how much of the work must be examined, the acceptance criteria, and the qualifications inspectors must hold.

TCI's role is to perform that inspection exactly as invoked — with qualified personnel, controlled procedures, and records that trace each result to the item, the procedure, and the inspector.

Commonly Invoked Documents

The requirements behind naval NDT.

Examples of documents frequently specified on naval shipbuilding work. The applicable documents, revisions, and requirements are always those stated in the customer's contract.

Requirements for Nondestructive Testing Methods

Defines NDT method requirements and personnel qualification and certification requirements for naval work where invoked.

MIL-STD-2035

Nondestructive Testing Acceptance Criteria

Acceptance criteria applied to the results of nondestructive examinations on naval fabrication.

Fabrication, Welding & Inspection — Machinery, Piping & Pressure Vessels

Fabrication, welding, and inspection requirements, including casting inspection and repair, for machinery and piping systems.

MIL-STD-1689

Fabrication, Welding & Inspection of Ships Structure

Requirements for welding and inspection of hull and structural fabrication.

Welding & Brazing Procedure and Performance Qualification

Qualification requirements for welding and brazing procedures and personnel, often verified during welding inspection.

NAVSEA-Related NDT Activities

Where our inspectors work.

Inspection activities performed in support of naval shipbuilding and defense fabrication.

Structural welds

Hull, deck, bulkhead, and foundation welds examined by VT, MT, UT, or PAUT as specified.

Piping systems

Surface and volumetric examination of piping welds in carbon, stainless, and nonferrous alloys.

Phased array examination

PAUT with encoded, reviewable data where the specification calls for it.

Repairs & excavations

Examination of excavations before repair welding and of completed repairs.

Welding & Fabrication Inspection

Inspection across the welding sequence.

Problems found before welding is complete are far cheaper to fix than problems found at final inspection. Our Certified Welding Inspectors and NDT technicians support each stage of fabrication.

  • Verification of joint preparation and fit-up
  • Monitoring of in-process requirements such as preheat and interpass cleaning
  • Final visual inspection of weld size, profile, and surface condition
  • Follow-on surface and volumetric NDT as specified
  • Repair tracking through excavation, re-weld, and re-inspection

01

Personnel qualifications

Naval NDT requires inspectors qualified and certified to the program's requirements, including documented training, experience, examinations, and current vision tests. TCI personnel are qualified and certified for the methods they perform under a written practice administered by our Level III personnel.

02

Quality documentation

Each examination is recorded with the item inspected, procedure and revision, technique, equipment and calibration data where applicable, results, and the certified inspector — so records hold up to customer and government review.

03

Teams at program scale

Shipbuilding programs need sustained inspection capacity. TCI recruits, mobilizes, and supervises inspection teams across shifts and project locations, and keeps crews consistent on long-term work.
